I love the Olympics
Since I was a little boy, I've loved watching the Olympics, summer or winter. I remember hearing the NBC theme song during the Calgary Olympics and trying to memorize it. At that time, the Olympics came only every four years, but the IOC switched the intervals so that every two years, the Olympics are held, summer or winter.
Anyway, when the Olympics came to Salt Lake City in 2002, I had the fortunate opportunity to be a member of the torch relay team. I was a volunteer on the media relations side of the relay and loved alomost every minute of it. It's an opportunity I'll always cherish.
But it did more for me than give me a springboard to jumpstart my career in public relations. It gave me a greater appreciation and love for something that can bring the world together for a short period of time in a peaceful situation. Countries at war, like the Koreas are, can walk into the Olympic Stadium side by side, as they did in Torino. Citizens of a nation who has invaded another can actually cheer for the conquered nation's soccer team when they win an Olympic qualifying game, just as the U.S. did when Iraq won.
It's an amazing program that Pierre de Coubertin put together. I love it!
